The foot may well be the most neglected part of the body, largely because it's so often hidden inside a shoe, or simply left outside the frame of the drawing – out of sight and out of mind. This unfamiliarity is, I suspect, what makes feet confusing to draw when they do come up, because as we'll see below, they have relatively simple forms and very little motion. As with the hand, you should not hesitate to take off your shoes and use your own feet as references, when possible! Let’s look briefly at the structure of the foot: The tarsals or ankle bones in blue, the metatarsi or instep bones in purple, and the phalanges or toes in pink. Although the first joint of the toes is back where "actual base" is indicated, flesh covers the foot up to the "apparent base" line, which is why they appear so short (that and the fact they are curved at all times, as we will see.) The bones of the foot are arranged to form 3 arches that give it the strength to support our bodies. The first two arches shape the bottom of the foot and the third shapes the upper part. Squeeze the sides of your foot and note how rigid they are: the bottom of the foot is not soft and does not deform under pressure. This means that in any position, the indentations of the arches will always show in an adult foot. This is the barely marked one outside the foot. It shows as a slight indentation from the heel, both below and outside the foot. This arch means that the outer contour is not a flat line (except in flat feet), and similarly the line from heel to ball is not a smooth curve but marks the arch. This is the large one inside the foot. It’s a very noticeable indentation. The part of the sole that’s behind the arch (under the red curve in the diagram) would be lost in shadow when the foot is on the ground, so we'd still see the arch, but since we usually see feet from above and not from the ground level, we see it really emphasized: This arch shapes the top of the foot.

In a way drawing feet serves as a perfect exercise, to help you refine your understanding and representation of the anatomy. Drawing feet does not have to be an impossible task. By breaking it down into steps, we can slowly and attentively represent feet through a drawing. We break it down by learning the components of the foot. Learning how to draw a foot takes time, this tutorial requires patience and focus, with that being said let us see what we will need. When learning how to draw complicated objects, such as various anatomical structures, it is best to use tools that are conducive to the best results. In this tutorial, we will be using a light blue pencil for the beginning stages and graphite pencils for the finer details. The light blue pencil will enable us to produce an under-layer that will set up our drawing process with graphite pencils. Graphite pencils provide us with a broad range of different shades. This means that the pencils will enhance your capability of having smooth gradients. It is important to learn the process of smooth shading in this tutorial. When we start our drawing, you must have good paper. I recommend 200/250 gsm paper. GSM refers to the thickness of the paper. A good suggestion is a fairly thicker paper (thicker than printer paper) because it deals well with erasers, pencils, and general drawing processes. It will also look way more beautiful as a finished product as the heavier paper tends to absorb graphite better. Drawing feet from various angles, such as the side and front, helps us to understand foot perspective much better. By learning to draw more than one angle of a foot, we will gain a better knowledge of the foot as a structure. Different perspectives help us to see the difference in shadow, bone structure, and movement. The foot is similar to the hand, however, it does not have the same dexterity as a hand. This means the foot’s movement variety is much less than that of the hand. The hand is quite capable of all kinds of movements, however, the foot is quite linear in its mobility. This is important to note because it helps guide our drawing into a final accurate depiction. If we are to draw a foot we need to understand its functionality from different perspectives. As previously mentioned, we need to grasp the scale of our objects, this will help us to position the feet correctly on our drawing paper. When drawing feet, we need to consider the size difference between the different aspects of the foot. However, the scale does become tricky when we work with different perspectives. In a sense, a toe can seem larger than the forefoot based on a particular perspective that we are looking at the foot from. All these concepts we need to take into consideration when placing our shapes down on our drawing paper. This is why it is good to analyze our reference image before we begin drawing. Always start with basic geometric forms. Why are feet hard to draw? Feet are hard to draw for two reasons: The shape of the foot is not easy to imagine or draw. It starts narrow at the heel and expands outward to the toes. The form also thins down from the shin bone to the toes. Making things more difficult for artists is the fact that the shape of the foot twists and turns depending on position. It is hard to keep track of these changes and even harder to draw them. However, this four-step method makes drawing feet much easier.

Drawing is a skill that requires hands-on practice so make sure you spend more time making art than consuming tutorials. Drawing feet can be quite challenging because they are usually in positions that are difficult to draw. To make it easier to practice we can break the foot into 3 major parts. Draw a box for the heel, sphere for the ankle and a tapered box (slightly triangular) for the front of the foot. When you first start practicing I would recommend skipping the toes as we did on the worksheet. Focusing on the 3 major parts will make the learning process smoother. Drawing the triangular box in perspective can be difficult so practice from reference and do some tracing if you can, this can help you see how the basic forms map onto a real foot. Stay at this stage of practice until you feel comfortable drawing these forms at multiple angles I also have a tutorial on basic forms that you can check out here (Opens in a new window) if you want more help with drawing forms in perspective. This method of drawing is very versatile because you can construct very complex objects from these simple forms. Drawing in the organic forms becomes a lot easier once we have the simplified version as a guideline. To connect all the major forms, the front of the foot will connect up towards the sphere (almost looks like a tent attached to the ball) & we add in a rounded form for the toes. When drawing the rounded form for the toes make sure that the shape is longer towards the center of the body (where the big toe is located) One thing you will notice as you practice is that the gap between the box and the triangular box is where the feet will bend the most. An artist who is aware of how the muscles and bones of the foot push out on the skin will understand how different aspects of a foot’s contour can be affected by these convex shapes. Additionally, an informed rendering of the foot’s wedgelike contour in space can make the difference between having a well-grounded, weighted figure and a figure that is disconnected from its surroundings. The foot should not be ignored. The foot is built for movement, stability, and toughness. It supports the weight of the entire body, and serves as its main source of locomotion. At first glance the foot doesn’t appear to be as complex as it is, but the foot and ankle contain 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This complexity allows the foot to withstand a vast amount of pressure while remaining very flexible. For drawing purposes we will only discuss the main sections of the foot and ankle that influence its shape and individual forms. The hindfoot is the back portion of the foot, and it includes the heel, which connects the foot to the lower leg.

Much like the rest of the human anatomy, drawing feet may pose a challenge to budding artists. The unique combination of 26 bones, 19 muscles, ligaments and joints gives feet their unique, seemingly complicated shape, but if you break that shape down into basic forms, illustrating feet becomes easy! We’ll show you how to draw feet in 12 easy steps (hint: it’s all about boxes!): If you prefer text guides to videos, and pencil drawing to digital, scroll down to see the tutorial broken down into steps with pencil illustrations for each stage of the process. To master the art of drawing feet, the right tools can make your job easier. We recommend using: An H pencil: The hard type of lead is the best choice for outlining since it leaves a light trace on paper. This is important because you might make mistakes while drawing, so you want to make sure you can easily erase them. A kneaded eraser: We always recommend using a kneaded eraser because it’s soft and easy to manipulate, so you can easily erase even the smallest lines. Lightly textured paper: The surface of this paper is nice and smooth, so your pencil can easily move over its surface, making the drawing process enjoyable. Of course, these are all just recommendations, and you should feel free to use the tools of your choice. Grab that whatever-pencil-this-is and let’s start sketching some feet! Uncover the battle raging within! The Other Middle Foot Box Now, let’s add another middle foot box. Since your foot becomes slightly wider from the talus to the toes, angle the lines slightly outwards. Although your foot is wider in the middle, it’s less tall than at the talus, and that has to be clear from your sketch. This box is approximately one-third of the heel box’s height: Let’s finish drawing the middle foot! Step 4. The Big Toe Box We’re keeping everything geometrical at this stage of drawing feet, and the toes won’t be any different. We’ll continue to draw the boxes, but these will be significantly smaller than the previous ones. To determine the size of each toe, take a look at how wide the middle foot box is. You need to attach five toes of different sizes to it, with the big toe being the largest and the other toes gradually getting smaller. Let’s draw the big toe first. The big toe should resemble a cuboid, like so: Time to draw the big toe! The big toe box in our sketch takes up about one-third of the middle foot’s width. It is also just a bit shorter than the middle foot box, for about one-fifth of its height. Notice that Gonçalo didn’t draw the lines straight. Since you have two bones in your toes, he made the lines at the top of the big toe slightly slanted downward and then straightened them to show the transition from one bone of the big toe to the other.
