Today, we're ranking every NFL team logo from worst to best. 32. Washington Commanders Year released: 2022 Call it recency bias, but Washington's much-anticipated rebranding was a dud. After using the Washington Football Team moniker for the past two seasons, fans in D.C. were eager to see the team's new permanent identity in 2022. What they got was a name that screamed generic and a logo to match. The burgundy and gold “W' is only a slight change from the logos the club used during its transition phase. Obviously, the team couldn't continue to use its controversial original name and logos after years of backlash. However, many fan-made designs online show much more character than what the team released earlier this year. However, there does appear to be a lot of fan sentiment to support another name change. This of course would include a logo change as well. So for now, it might be better to give the Commanders a TBD grade. 31. Los Angeles Rams Year released: 2020 While the Rams won Super Bowl 56 with this rebranded logo, unfortunately, they can't also win the NFL championship for the league's best logo. Many fans did not take well to Los Angeles' branding overhaul prior to the 2020 season. The logo itself drew heavy criticism, and the uniforms revealed shortly after didn't help matters. The logo is also suspiciously similar to one used by a Texas high school.

But the current pattern of the NFL logo we all see today was created in 2008 and had a marketing team that creates different versions of the logos when they deem it fit. New Orleans Saints The Fleur-de-lis, which means “flower of the lily” in French is a logo design they use to pay tribute to the Big Easy heritage, making it a great representation of the New Orleans culture. Webster denotes it as ‘the opponents not trembling in fear.’ 31. Carolina Panthers The only fault with the logo is the panther cut in an untactful manner from the shoulders, thereby reducing the aesthetics due to the head being awkwardly turned to whoever sees it, which makes it quite a little creepy. 30. Washington Commanders The Commanders logo design is much better than the previous one who made no sense as it objectified the Native Americans. The proud warrior’s logo is like a nested doll with a circle repeating another set of feathers that doesn’t appeal to the eyes. Using just feathers would’ve been more appropriate as the point would have still been passed. Changing the name and logo was a smart move. 29. Cleveland Browns The Browns take the adage of simplicity in logo designing to an extreme. No team has their logo as just plain orange color.

Football logos are a much different beast than baseball logos – most of them are worn on the helmets of teams, which means the direction they face, and how “fast” they look, matters. It also means that something can look good on a helmet, but not so good on other pieces of merchandise, like a T-shirt or a baseball cap. As you’ll see below, there’s kind of a formula for what makes an effective logo, which makes ranking this a little boring at times. But it also makes the best logos stand out that much more. As I did with the MLB logos, I’m using Chris Creamer’s Sportslogos.net as the source for these images, perhaps the most comprehensive logo design database in the world. And without further ado, here comes the opening kickoff… 32. Los Angeles Rams The Rams may have emerged as the top dogs in the NFC, but they end up in last place in our logo rankings, thanks to this mark, the disappointing cherry on top of their generally panned 2020 rebrand. What makes it the worst logo in the league? First of all, it’s contrived – the horn protruding out of the “A” feels unnatural, like the product of the most boring mad scientists’ gene-splicing experiment. But worst of all, it’s boring, and looks like an insignia that’d be embroidered onto a free windbreaker handed out by an insurance company at corporate events instead of a football logo. Even the Rams’ secondary logo, which at least has the good taste to be a ram’s head, lacks personality, especially when compared with their prior logo, which they could have easily recolored to fit with their old-is-new gold and white scheme. 31. New York Jets In my MLB logo rankings, I placed the New York Mets, my favorite team, in the number one spot. While I’m sure that made some readers slander my logo ranking integrity in private conversation, let the placement of my favorite football team’s logo be a testament to my wisdom and impartiality.

In fact, a more aggressive design could better reflect the team’s name and city. 28. Tennessee Titans The Titans’ flame logo has potential, but its execution feels dated. Truthfully, it feels like a high school mascot. 27. Houston Texans The Houston Texans’ bull logo is sleek, but it doesn’t stand out. A more distinctive approach might make it feel less corporate. 26. New England Patriots The “Flying Elvis” logo has been around for decades, and while it’s recognizable, it feels a bit stuck in the past. Sorry, Pats fans.

Both the elf logo and the secondary mark are far superior to Cleveland’s current logo — an orange helmet. Not terrible, but uninspired. The New York Giants have been rather terrible on the field in recent years, and their logo isn’t much better. Unfortunately, the Giants took a step back in the visual department starting in 2000. From 1976-1999, New York’s primary logo — which also adorned the helmets — read ‘GIANTS’ with a line underneath. The look became synonymous with the 1986 and 1990 Super Bowl winners. For whatever reason the franchise decided it was time for a change — and the change was for the worse. Once the franchise switched from ‘NY’ to ‘GIANTS’ in ’76, it should have never looked back.

To determine the “ultimate ranking” of NFL logos, our team sourced rankings from 7 different reputable sports sites including FanJuicer, Athlon Sports, Bleacher Report, Sports Feel Good Stories, Sporty Tell, USA Today, and Thoughts from the Bench. We created a table listing each team’s spot in the 7 rankings, removed the best and worst rank scores to eliminate outliers, and averaged the scores out. These final averages determined each team’s place in the final ultimate NFL logo standings. Using these rankings, we were able to analyze the logos to find commonalities linking the top rated NFL logos (and the worst). Additionally, we calculated the variance. Our findings were interesting – the team with the lowest variance was the Cleveland Browns, who placed at the bottom of the rankings.
